A nationwide celebration honoring the literary icon’s enduring legacy through food, conversation, and community.
[May 18, 2026] — The M.F.K. Fisher Foundation is pleased to announce the upcoming inaugural M.F.K. Fisher Month, a celebration honoring the life, legacy, and enduring influence of literary icon, M.F.K. Fisher.
Beginning June 3, 2026, and continuing through July 3 — what would have been Fisher’s 118th birthday — the celebration will invite communities across the country to come together around the table in the spirit of Fisher’s belief that food is never merely nourishment, but a reflection of memory, love, longing, and the small rituals that give life meaning.
“My mother showed us that food is never merely nourishment,” said Kennedy Friede Golden, President of the M.F.K. Fisher Foundation, in announcing the initiative. “The way we gather around the table — and what we share there — reflects something deeper about who we are. M.F.K. Fisher Month is an invitation to expand the table itself and welcome more voices into the conversation.”
Widely regarded as one of the founders of modern food writing, M.F.K. Fisher transformed the way the world thinks about food. Through seminal works such as The Art of Eating, Consider the Oyster, The Gastronomical Me, and How to Cook a Wolf, she elevated the genre, blending memoir, philosophy, humor, and sensual observation in a way that established food as central to the human condition.
Though often grouped alongside culinary contemporaries such as Julia Child and James Beard, Fisher occupied a singular place in the food world. Where others taught Americans how to cook, Fisher explored why we eat — and what our appetites reveal about who we are.
Born in Albion, Michigan, in 1908, Fisher spent much of her life in California’s wine country, becoming a literary icon whose legacy included helping to found the Napa Valley Wine Library. Her beloved “Last House” in Glen Ellen became a gathering place for notable friends and admirers including Jacques Pépin, Alice Waters, Maya Angelou, and John Ash.
M.F.K. Fisher Month will begin on June 3, 2026, with an intimate gathering at Fisher’s Last House in Glen Ellen, California, after which the celebration will continue with events at:
Details about individual events can be found at mfkfisher.org/m-f-k-fisher-month.

The month-long celebration will conclude July 3, 2026, with the announcement of the winners of the seventh annual M.F.K. Fisher Emerging Writers Contest, now under the stewardship of the Foundation.
